A couple of weeks ago, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum got its best trailer yet, but fans have been kept in the dark when it comes to the release date. Until today, that is — publisher Nacon has finally announced when the action adventure will make its debut. The game comes to PS5 and PS4 on 25th May 2023.
Playing as the titular creature, the game charts his journey as he pursues the One Ring. Much of the gameplay appears to involve a mix of platforming and stealth, while the narrative seems to be a big focus, involving many familiar faces from Tolkien's books.
Here's hoping the game is worth the wait. Are you excited to play The Lord of the Rings: Gollum? Don't speak in riddles in the comments section below.

Yikes. You can see in even the brief gameplay clips that the Gollum's animations are either really stiff, or not even finalized yet. Or they're using really old pre-alpha footage, which would also be a very bad sign. I predict an entertaining train wreck if this is out in less than two months lol
Lol, whyyyy. I don't wanna yuck anyone's yum, but I think they already did that with the existence of this game.
Not trying to be rude, but does anyone care about this game?
Dead on arrival, or before arrival, even
Yikes. Huge Tolkien fan here, and same with Rings of Power - I have zero interest in this. This looks bad
I dont understand the hate here it looks a lot more interesting then what i thought about it first. Looks like a battle between good and evil in Gollums head yeah ill probably get this.
It just doesn’t seem like a good idea to build a whole game around a character that’s hard to root for.
I'm so not confident in this game but I hope I'm wrong. It just has too many red flags.
"Ed golfing humors troll" is more interesting and a fun anagram of Lord of the Rings Gollum than the actual game itself.
Is that supposed to be Gollum?!?! It don't even look like him???
A proper open world Middle Earth RPG would've been great but this??? Yet another hard pass.
There seem to be a large number of the so called big titles being released, like this, and they're all a bit.....crap?
@Bentleyma Gollum is, ironically, the embodiment of Mankind. So, he is supposed to be complex because so is human nature - I'm aware he was a Hobbit before anyone says anything - Tolkien was showing the pull of evil and the kindness heart that actually exists in 99% of humans.
I won't ever play this game(unless it's on Extra maybe) but I am here to watch Rob Pearson of Playstation Access play it. I feel like that's the only reason this game exist to be honest lol.
The Smeagol impression for a whole stream will be hilarious.
I would have bet on Suicide Squad being the biggest flop of the year... but that's because I had forgotten about the existence of this one
Edit... just saw the trailer and no... Suicide Squad is still gonna be the biggest flop
They got Gollum looking like my local crackhead down the road
It does look ropey, thanks for not ripping on it in the article as it’s an easy target lol.
I think the best we can hope for is that the developers made it with real passion for the source material and that this comes through as you play it.
Gollum is the last character in that story I’d want to have an adventure with
I think I played this on my GameCube.
It’s the 20 year anniversary of The Hobbit, could have remastered this instead.
This looks like a well realized true to the original ground up remake of a PS2 game that never existed. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?
Either way, "I wish I could be Gollum" is not something anyone has ever said.
Looks great from what's been shown, I expect because it's not open world its automatically crap!!
This reminds of the 2 Styx games which I loved. Might give it a try.
As a massive Tolkien fan I have to be interested and will likely get it if it reviews decently. I am all for more people exploring a Middle Earth not based on the Jackson films (even though I love those).
@SolaceCreed Well said.
No thanks, I'd rather not.
@Dman10 @invictus4000 @kyleforrester87 @Flaming_Kaiser I'll definitely play this eventually, but maybe wait for a $20 sale in a few years.
I still can't believe that this is an actual game that will be releasing soon.
Huh... did they change the art style? Looks like they didn't secure the rights for the likeness from the movies or something. The characters look cartoony.
It seems a very strange choice still. I have read LotRs many times since I picked it up straight after finishing the Hobbit as a 10 year old almost half a century ago. And never once, in all those years did I think to myself, What I really want to experience this tale from view of the little slimy fish obsessed creature we met below the misty mountains.
Does anyone else remember playing the Hobbit on the ZX spectrum, In all it's text based glory. I still remember sketching out the map as I made my way through the maze below the misty mountains.
Sigh. From the studio that thought it was a good idea to make Shelob, the arachnid descendent of the light-eating primordial spider-demon Ungoliant, into a sexy, big-tiddy goth girl.
I love Tolkien's works but I'm pretty sure I'm going to do my best to pretend this game was unmade in the fires of Orodruin.
